Thanks to everyone who came out last night to discuss the new Ragdoll and Rain features that are part of "1.31: SUPERPATCH!"

RAFTER and GOPHUR had their hands full with some well thought out questions. Heck, even I learned a thing or two, so that's cool!

The chat began promptly at 7pm (just as soon as we got Darkvex to cram it) with an introduction by RAFTER. The new format of submitting questions in text to get in line seemed to work well and we were off.

Ragdoll and the ODE physics coming in 1.31 generated alot of great questions:

"Is the blood splatter related to ragdoll and if so can I ask a question about it? Question would be "Is blood splatter trajectory based?" So if there is a sniper somewhere and the guy next to me gets hit...could I determine the general direction of the shooter...you know...using my uber detective skills" - Ad0ran

RAFTER explained that what happens is when the shot goes through an infantry, a "ray" goes through them and if the surface area behind the player is large enough and close enough, the decal displays. It's not CSI accurate but it will the general direction of the shooter.

"If you are already in the water and get killed, do you make a splash before you sink?" - Romzburg

RAFTER answered that yes, a small splash activates. Any bone in the skeleton of the infantry that interacts with the water will create a splash. The full torso/body creates a bigger splash. He also went on the reveal that an infantry that ragdolls out on the bank of the river and rolls in will cause a splash as well.

"Does ragdoll have different death screams depending on the forces used to kill an inf?" - Keir

"Currently our infantry uses the same death scream we have now." RAFTER said. "Ragdoll sounds only include interacting with environment (bumps, scrapes) as the fall or slide off a surface"

There was quite a bit of interest in rain and how it will affect gameplay.

"How much will rain affect the sound signitures of vehicles?" - KC23

GOPHUR answered:  "We haven't made any sound changes in relation to rain but the sound of rain falling will do some sound masking."

Which led to the follow up question from Crescent: "Does the rain make different sounds based on the surface it's hitting?"

"Not in this release. However we have just acquired sounds for XML which allows us to tag certain objects with certain sounds, so it's definitely something that can be added in the future" was GOPHUR's reply.

"Will this basic rain system evolve into a more in-depth system that will have varying levels of strength, such as torrential downpours, random showers, mist, ect. that can affect the performance of vehicles and perhaps even give way to smaller features like muddy infantry textures?" - Georgeh

GOPHUR replied: "Yes we can create different states, but it's in the future."

Bit of a shame the thunder is random on client side, it should be synced so snipers/tanks/AT's can use this to mask their shots.

Why are the raindrops falling straight when flying? Wouldnt be better to just cancel the raindrops in the air.

Sorry I coulnd't make it. Sounded like a good chat for all. Wanted to stop in, but my HUSKERS were playing and I had to watch them BEAT Missouri!
